When Thorazine first hit the market it paved the way for pharmaceutical treatment of mental divergence.  Previously comparable situations were treated with psychotherapy, lobotomy, ECT (electro convulsive therapy) or a variety of other shock treatments (insulin, etc.) It quickly gained recognition as a veritable wonder drug. Approved by the FDA in 1954, Thorazine’s impact saw widespread attention that changed the world as we know it – patients once institutionalized were now capable of returning to society and the door for the development for psycho pharmaceuticals was opened. 10 years after its approval approximately 50 million people had taken the drug and within 15 years Smith Kline and French’s revenues increased by 800%.  A virtual panacea it was used for treatment of Schizophrenia, Alcoholism, Childhood nausea (as a suppository) and of course the occasional bad ACID Trip.
